Burgess injury adds to bad weekend for Stags

After Saturdays 2-0 loss at promotion rivals AFC Wimbledon the mood around the fans was hardly the best. Today we learned of the news that Burgess is set to be out for 4 weeks after he strained his calf during Saturdays match. An injury that forced him to be withdrawn from the action just after half time.

The Burgess injury is not good news for us at all. He is the only left footed winger that we have in our squad. It will mean that Ryan Williams will have to swap back to the left wing and constantly cut in on his right foot. Some good does come out of it. Speight and Briscoe will have to fight it out for the spot on the right wing. Hopefully it will give one of them the chance to have a good run in the side. Both are good players who just need a little more game time.

After the weekends loss we slipped to 5th in the table. With both Kettering and Luton having games in hand on us we could easily be overtaken and we could slip out of the promotion places. The form table doesn’t look pretty either. We have collected a mere 7 points from a possible 18, averaging 1.17 points per game. The other 4 teams in the top 5 currently sit in the top 4 of the form table. Oxford, Stevenage and AFC Wimbledon have all accumulated 13 points from a possible 18 whilst York City have won a tremendous 9 on the bounce.

After the game Holdsworth said that he would step up his search for a new centre half. Whether that will be signing trialist Aaron Brown, or bringing somebody completely different in… Your guess is as good as mine. Personally I think Garner just needs a little rest. Brough and Jones are both very competent at this level and should be given a chance to show us all what they can do before Holdsworth brings somebody else in.

On Saturday we play Chester City at home. A perfect chance for us to bounce back from the weekends defeat. Today Chester got dealt another blow to what has been a disastrous season for them so far.

Nothing but controversy has surrounded the club since the start of the campaign. With attendances dropping lower and lower each week Chester are really in a mess. They have no manager, they owe money and players are starting to leave. We know what it is like to face problems from Chairman and we all wish you well and hope that you come out of the other side. Whether it is with Chester City or newly formed club.
