Stags lose 3 on the spin

2010 February 10

Our loss last night at Stevenage Borough was our 3rd loss in as many games. We’ve managed to pick up 6 points out of a possible 18 since the turn of the new year. No where near good enough if we are to finish in the play off spots.

We went 1-0 up last night through a Jon Shaw goal. I didn’t go but it was supposed to be quite a good goal from him. From listening to the commentary details it sounded like we matched them in the first half we were the better team. It also sounded like both teams should of had a man sent off. Ashton raised his hands and pushed Perry to the floor, whilst Kyle Nix later on in the game did his own pushing of a Stevenage player.

The second half started and Stevenage came charging out of the traps. They won a corner within the first 30seconds and put us under pressure throughout the second half. Yemi Odubade managed to make it 1-1 with a shot that deflected off one of our defenders and into the back of the net. Stevenage had got a bit of luck that seems to be escaping us right now. Then we conceded two goals in 5 minutes. Odubade got on the scoresheet again, Adam Drury followed him 5 minutes later. It was game over unless we could get a quick goal from somewhere.

It didn’t happen.. Infact we went on to concede a penalty after Luke Jones supposedly brought down Odubade in the box. Jones got sent off and Odubade stepped up to complete his hatrick. Alan Marriott had other ideas mind. He made a great save and kept the score at a respectable 3-1. Marriott once again showing his quality.

We finished the game with 10men and the 138 travelling fans went home unhappy after seeing their team match the Blue Square Premier leaders in the first half but collapse in the second half. We slipped out of the play off spots and all the teams around us have 2 or 3 games in hand. For the first time this season it looks like the play offs are slipping away from us. If we don’t pick up our form in the next few games then you can say goodnight Vienna to our dreams of playing in the Football League next season.
