Stags set to sign a new left back
Rotherham full back Andy Nicholas is set to join us on loan tomorrow until the end of the season. It’s not the first time Holdsworth has enquired about Andy but this time it looks like he has got his man.
Last week Holdsworth allowed Paul Heckingbottom to leave on loan to Gateshead on deadline day. I suspect Holdsworth allowed him to leave to free up wages to bring somebody else in. However he couldn’t tie up a deal for a couple of player he was chasing so we were left with just Craig Armstrong for the left back slot.
Today it emerged that we were competing with Stevenage Borough to sign Torquay left back Kevin Nicholson. Nicholson is a proven BSP player and played a major part in getting Torquay promoted to the Football League last season. He has a really long throw and is good at set pieces. It looks like we may have missed out on him though as he is set to follow ex Torquay team mate Tim Sills to Stevenage Borough who are currently sitting 2nd in the table.
Holdsworth has lined up another left back though. Andy Nicholas of Rotherham United. He’s racked up over 150 games in the Football League and is only 26. So he has good experience, whilst still being pretty young. He also has a long throw. Something that Holdsworth seems quite keen on his left backs to have. Mayo and Armstrong both have quite long throws but Nicholas’ throw is on the same scale as Exodus Geohaghons! It has been reported on the BBC website that this deal has gone through but the club have not confirmed this yet.
I hope we manage to pull this off as his long throw will add another dimension to our attack. Plus, if we manage to master it like Stoke have it will no doubt provide us with lots of goals.
Left back is definitely the weakest part of our squad and needs improving. Armstrong isn’t a bad player, he just hasn’t got enough pace to play there really. He came here to play central midfield or central defence but has only been given the chance to prove himself at left back.
If the BBC site is anything to go on he should be registered in time to play in tomorrows game against Stevenage Borough.
