Burgess wishes he was still at Rushden and Diamonds

2010 April 13

“I certainly wish I was still there but it’s easy to say I should have done this or that” The words of Andy Burgess in todays Northants Evening Telegraph ahead our clash tonight against his former club tonight.

As a Mansfield fan it’s not something you wish to see your player saying. In that one sentence it questions his commitment to Mansfield Town FC. Rushden have had a terrific season but it was Burgess’s decision to leave them in the summer to join the club he has supported since he was a young child, Luton Town. He described it as a ‘dream move’, then when Richard Money told Burgess he wasn’t wanted we took over his contract after an initial loan spell here.

“People close to me know that I regret leaving and I’m gutted that I’m not part of this season’s achievements” Andy Burgess – Northants Evening Telegraph

Lets not forget that we have stuck by Burgess after he was foolish enough to bet on games that he was playing in. He was banned for a month back in January and missed 7 games. Then most recently he had go at the fans after the 0-0 draw against Tamworth saying he would rather play infront of 1 fan rather than 3,000 people who are going to moan.

For an experienced player Burgess does open his mouth more than what you think he would. He speaks his mind which is good but I think he should learn to bite his tongue at times and let his performances on the pitch do the talking.

Burgess was out with an injury at the weekend but should be back in contention for tonights game. Gary Mills, Jon Challinor and Rob Duffy are all fit to face there former club too. Rushden come into the game 11 games unbeaten and have secured a play off spot with 3 games to go but are without star man Lee Tomlin tonight. Former Stag Aaron O’Connor is expected to start after he scored 2 goals at the weekend against Ebbsfleet. Another former Stag Jefferson Louis is also fit to play, it should be a laugh watching him.

I wish he was still at Rushden too, all flair and no product. Yet again, Holdsworth brought in someone who was no better than what we already had.

Can we swap him for O’Connor?
